Steering Wheel - Airbag Removal

WARNINGS:
To avoid the damaging the airbag or rotary switch connectors, do not let the airbag hang by its connectors.
Never handle the pyrotechnic systems (pretensioners or airbags) near to a source of heat or naked flame - they may be triggered.


1. Disconnect the battery

2. Press down brakes and wait for about 90 seconds after disconnecting battery to prevent airbag deployment.

3. Remove: the bolts on the cowlings under the steering wheel & the cowlings under the steering wheel. (illustrated below)



4. Insert a flat screwdriver into the aperture (labelled 1, illustration below) located behind the steering wheel.

5. Unclip the driver's front airbag by pushing in the direction of the arrow (illustration labelled 2 below).



6. Unlock at (3) the driver's front airbag connectors (4) illustrated below:



7. Disconnect the connectors (4) from the driver's front airbag illustrated below, and remove the driver's front airbag.



IMPORTANT To prevent the any component from being thrown upwards, store the airbag with the inflatable cushion facing upwards.

  3. God bless you man. This works on MEGANE SCENIC Mark II same way. You don't even need to remove the steering column covers.

  4. Many thanks. Your diagrams are worth a thousand Haynes manual photographs. I was struggling with the airbag unit clip because I didn't understand its shape and how it was fitted.
